Overview

The Fermenter is the first food-processing building available to your colony. It is unlocked at the start of the game and can be constructed using only Logs as building material. The Fermenter requires electrical Power to operate and begins the colony’s ability to turn raw crops into more advanced foodstuffs.

Fermenters convert crops and intermediate ingredients into fermented food products. The documented production chains feeding a Fermenter include Fermented cassava, Fermented soybean, and Fermented mushroom. Each fermented product depends on upstream production buildings and items:

  • Fermented Cassava requires Cassava grown and harvested by Farmhouses that plant and collect the Cassava crop.
  • Fermented Soybean requires Soybean grown and harvested by Farmhouses. Producing one of the intermediate ingredients for soybean fermentation — Canola oil — requires planting Canola in Farmhouses to harvest Canola seeds, then processing those seeds in an Oil Press to create Canola Oil. The Oil Press and its inputs are therefore part of the broader soybean fermentation chain.
  • Fermented Mushroom depends on Mushroom production from Hydroponic Gardens. Hydroponic Gardens are required to supply mushrooms as input for the Fermenter.

Additional construction materials for buildings involved in these production chains are specified where applicable. For the Canola/Oil Press chain and some agricultural buildings, Planks and Gears are listed as additional construction materials. Hydroponic Gardens and their related infrastructure require Metal block and Water in addition to other standard construction materials.

Practical notes for planning and logistics:

  • The Fermenter is available immediately and enables early production of enhanced food items, so placing one early can diversify food sources.
  • The Fermenter requires Power; plan electrical generation and wiring before relying on fermentation for food security.
  • Farmhouses are the primary upstream producers for Cassava and Soybean. Ensure adequate farmland, seeds, and workforce to maintain continuous supply.
  • Oil Presses are necessary if you intend to produce Fermented Soybean varieties that require Canola Oil; the Oil Press adds an extra processing step and material dependencies (Canola Seeds → Canola Oil).
  • Fermented Mushroom production is resource-intensive: Hydroponic Gardens supply mushrooms and have distinct construction requirements. It takes eight Hydroponic Gardens to supply one Fermenter producing Fermented mushroom, so scale hydroponics accordingly.
  • Account for additional building materials (Planks, Gears, Metal Blocks) and water needs when expanding fermentation-based food production.

The Fermenter is therefore a small but central component of mid- to long-term food networks, linking basic crop production to higher-tier consumables and requiring coordination of power, agricultural capacity, and supporting processing buildings.
