Overview

The Printing Press is a production building in Timberborn first introduced during the Open Alpha and present through subsequent updates. It is classified among the game's heavier industrial buildings and is noted in developer and community records for having undergone aesthetic variations (including an obsolete Iron Teeth model) and faction associations that changed over time; an update note records that the building later became associated with the Folktails faction.

The Printing Press requires substantial power to operate. In community guides the Printing Press is listed alongside the Smelter and Explosives Factory as one of the most power-hungry production buildings, consuming 150 horsepower while active. Because of this high draw, players are advised to run the Printing Press primarily when their power generation is high (for example during wet seasons when Water Wheel produce maximum output) and to pause it during droughts or other times of constrained electrical capacity.

Historical build-cost records from the Closed Beta show the Printing Press had a construction cost of 50 Planks, 30 Gears, and 30 Metal. The building dates back to Open Alpha introductions and has been mentioned in community-maintained resources documenting its availability and visual changes over successive versions.

Practical placement and operation notes drawn from community strategy material:

  • Place the Printing Press inside a production cluster with linked supply buildings and local storage to minimize hauling time. Group it near a Large or Small Warehouse and a Hauling Post so produced goods are deposited quickly and haulers can service the press efficiently.
  • Locate the Printing Press where reliable power is available. Situate it close to Water Wheels or along Power Shaft routes to avoid long transmission networks; when the grid becomes constrained, pause the press to prioritize pumps and life-critical buildings.
  • Leave room for future expansion and access. A 2–3 tile buffer around a production core helps add additional machines, storage, or haulers later without blocking paths.
  • During droughts, add the Printing Press to the list of non-essential power consumers to pause, freeing power for water pumps and emergency systems.
  • Monitor building internal storage and overall warehouse capacity. Excessive output clogging internal or nearby storage will cause the press to idle if haulers cannot keep up; a balanced hauling/post arrangement prevents throughput bottlenecks.

Trivia and context

  • The in-game Printing Press echoes a long real-world history of printing technology: woodblock printing dates to China in the 7th century, movable type was developed by Bi Sheng around 1040, and Gutenberg later combined technologies into the first widely used movable-type press in Europe around 1440.
  • Community image and model assets for the Printing Press have changed over time; an older Iron Teeth model is recorded as obsolete in community image archives.
  • Closed Beta construction costs and faction-image assignments have been documented in community wikis, showing how the building’s presentation and availability evolved during development.
