Steel

Steel is a high-strength alloy made from iron and carbon. In Dyson Sphere Program, it is produced by smelting 3 Iron Ingots in an Arc Smelter, and it serves as an important midgame crafting material for infrastructure and later logistics chains.

It is unlocked early and immediately appears in the construction of key oil-processing buildings such as the Oil Extractor and Oil Refinery. From there, Steel remains a common ingredient in many building recipes, especially for industrial and logistics-related structures. It is also used as an intermediate material for Titanium Alloy, which becomes important once more advanced production and space logistics begin.

Steel is especially worth stockpiling because demand rises sharply over the course of progression. Early on, its main use is building construction, but after Titanium alloy is unlocked, Steel becomes part of that alloy’s production chain as well. Later, when Dyson Shell construction begins, Steel is also consumed indirectly through Small Carrier Rocket production, causing its demand to increase further. As a result, it is practical to scale Steel production alongside your expansion rather than treating it as a low-priority material.

A useful production note is that one smelter making Iron Ingots produces exactly enough input for one smelter making Steel over the same 3-second cycle. This makes a 1:1 smelter ratio straightforward to set up, as long as you supply enough iron ore. Because Steel has a relatively long smelting time and cannot be hand-crafted into large quantities efficiently, keeping a reserve in storage helps prevent shortages when new buildings or production lines are unlocked.
