Gear Workshop

Overview
Gear Workshop is a production building that converts planks into gears for use in Timberborn machinery and construction. It consumes planks as input and outputs gears, making it a central component of any colony that relies on mechanical devices and advanced water management. The building has an internal storage that holds both planks and gears, allowing it to buffer input and output when logistics fluctuate.
Historically, the Gear Workshop was introduced in the Open Alpha of the game. In a later Update 2 the building received two notable changes: the time required to produce one gear was reduced from 6 hours to 3 hours, and the internal storage capacity was expanded from 8 planks and 10 gears to 10 planks and 10 gears. These changes increased the building’s throughput and its ability to continue operating during short interruptions in supply or demand.
- Build a Gear Workshop shortly after establishing your first Lumber Mill so you can begin converting produced planks into gears as soon as there is a steady plank supply.
- Provide a Medium Warehouse to store gears produced by the Gear Workshop; the warehouse prevents congestion and ensures gears are available for other constructions and machines.
- The Gear Workshop’s internal storage holds up to 10 planks and 10 gears, which helps it continue producing during brief supply gaps but does not replace external storage for long-term stockpiles.
- Each gear now takes 3 hours to produce after Update 2, so plan production chains and workforce assignment with that rate in mind to meet demand.
- Position the Gear Workshop near plank sources and transport routes to minimize hauling distance; despite its internal buffer, frequent supply is required for sustained gear output.
- Monitor gear consumption by mechanical buildings and construction so you can scale the number of Gear Workshops and warehouses proportionally.
The Gear Workshop remains the primary in-game facility for transforming harvested and milled wood into the mechanical components required for higher-tier infrastructure. Its production rate and storage characteristics define its role within logistical networks, and changes made in Update 2 improved both throughput and short-term resilience.
