Overview

The Metalsmith is a production building that converts metal parts into advanced components used for construction and technological progression. It is part of the mid-to-late game production chain and sits after metal part generation; its primary role is to transform raw metal parts into the finished items required to unlock and erect more complex buildings.

Metalsmith appears where metal parts are available in the player’s economy and requires a supply of metal parts to operate. It occupies a fixed footprint and must be connected to the settlement’s logistics so workers can reach it and deliver inputs. The building requires labor from beavers assigned as smiths; these workers operate the forge and perform the crafting tasks. Metalsmiths consume time and a steady input of metal parts to output the constructed metal components.

Because the only in-game use for metal parts is building construction, the Metalsmith is not a continuous consumer of diverse resources but a convertor that centralizes metal use into construction-ready pieces. One Metalsmith is generally sufficient for most small-to-medium settlements if metal part production is limited; expanding metal part production without expanding smithing capacity can lead to stockpiles of unused metal parts, so scale Metalsmith numbers to match metal part throughput.

Practical notes and strategy:

  • Place Metalsmiths near metal part storage or processing areas to minimize transport time and reduce worker travel delays.
  • Assign enough workers so the building is staffed during peak production; idle metal parts indicate either a worker shortage or a bottleneck elsewhere.
  • Because metal parts are used almost exclusively for buildings, plan metal production and smithing around construction schedules rather than continuous constant output.
  • Monitor metal part generation: if you ramp up smelters or other metal producers, add additional Metalsmiths to convert parts into usable components and prevent resource congestion.
  • Consider routing Beavers with efficient paths (roads, elevated walkways) between mines, smelters, storage, and the Metalsmith to improve throughput.
  • The Metalsmith ties into the broader construction chain; expanding it is only necessary when you have steady demand for the finished metal components used by advanced structures.
